Online Exhibit: Maps and Mapping: Masked Camp

Original Sketch and published version of a hidden encampment.

Kephart mapped areas on a small scale as well. Above, a basic map sketch from Kephart's research journals becomes one of the illustrations published in the revised edition of Camping and Woodcraft. Kephart's notes on the subject continue on subsequent pages. These pages continue below with pieces of preliminary text that was also incorporated into the final published work. Further pages may point to future writings.

Research Journal notes and sketch for a hide-out.

Towards the end of Kephart's notes concerning "Masked Camps" for Camping and Woodcraft is this sketch for a hide out location with several notes. The curious notation "New kind of detective story" may be connected with the later work "The Trail of a Bullet."
