Hunter Library 186 is the library's only classroom. The classroom was established and funded by the Library to support its Bibliographic Instruction program. Library-related instruction almost always requires that the students have access to a computer during the class and that the instructor have a presentation workstation.
The Library provides bibliographic instruction for over 200 classes per year. The structure and schedule of each course dictates the demand for library instruction. This means that instruction sessions are given throughout the semesters and during all time slots that courses are taught. The library needs to be able to respond to requests to provide bibliographic instruction for a course often with only a 1 - 2 week notice.
The Library does make its classroom available to other university faculty
and staff on an ad hoc basis. In order to ensure that the classroom is available
for bibliographic instruction when needed, the classroom cannot be reserved
by faculty and staff outside of the library on a recurring basis.
Facility
The classroom is equipped with 24 student computers and one teacher workstation
with an overhead video projector for displaying materials from a computer
monitor or from an Elmo projector. There are also room speakers, a CD player
and a VCR.
Scheduling Policy
The scheduling priorities for use of the library's classroom are:
When classes are in session, the classroom is scheduled on a class period basis (e.g. 1 ½ hr on Tues & Thurs) rather than on an hourly basis.
For academic classes not involving library staff, the classroom may be scheduled for no more than 3 times per class section during a semester and these sessions cannot be back to back. The 3 times per semester rule may be waived when a faculty member requests the classroom one week or less in advance of the class.
University staff who request the classroom for uses other than academic classes (staff development, student workshops, etc.) may book HL186 for no more than 3 sessions per semester that meet in a particular time slot. These 3 sessions may not be back to back. Since the purpose of the 3-times-per-semester rule is to make the classroom available for the most common class meeting times (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.), Hunter Library may also request that such use be spread over the 8 - 5 workday.
The 3-times-per-semester rule may be waived when the request is made one week or less in advance.
Instructors and staff unfamiliar with the operation of the classroom should contact the Library Systems Office (ext. 7109) to schedule an orientation session on using the room in advance of when they need the classroom for their class.
Librarians will schedule HL 186 for their bibliographic instruction sessions. The Administrative Office will do scheduling for non-library faculty and staff. The Head of Reference, Becky Kornegay, and the Coordinator of Bibliographic Instruction, Betsy Whitley, are the backup when Dora Wike is out and will handle questions of policy interpretation.
Classes scheduled for library instruction must be listed on the calendar under the library staff name. Course instructor's name should appear in parentheses.
All uses of the classroom are to be scheduled. Anyone using the classroom without having it scheduled may be asked to leave.
Keys to the classroom are available at the Circulation Desk. Desk staff will check the HL 186 room schedule before giving out key(http://www.wcu.edu/calendar/).

Technical support
Hunter Library's Systems Librarian is responsible for loading new software
at faculty's request. The Systems Librarian will review the requirements
for loading the software and determine its impact on the classroom configuration.
The Library retains the right to refuse to load software in the classroom
if it is deemed to potentially interfere with the use of the classroom.
It is suggested that instructor have software mounted on the University's
AppServer instead. At least two weeks notice is required to install additional
software and have faculty test. The requesting instructor must show proof
of license for number of copies to be installed in the classroom.
The Systems Librarian is responsible for establishing and maintaining the default settings and security. A two weeks notice is required if these settings need to be changed for a class. The security password must not be given out.
The Library Systems Office is the first contact for technical/equipment
problems. If Systems Office staff are not available, the instructor should
call the Computer Center.
Reporting Problems
A "problem pad" will be kept in the classroom. Instructors must
drop off the problem report at the circulation desk, so that the problem
can be handled quickly. The Public Services Assistant, Eva Cook, will make
sure that problems are reported to the Library Systems staff and will regularly
check the classroom supplies.
