Education in Western North Carolina
This site features three sections illustrating education in western North
Carolina:
- County school buildings from Jackson and Swain counties and the Training
School operated by the federal government for the Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians;
- the Sylva Collegiate Institute, a private school supported by a regional
Baptist association from 1900-1932; and,
- Cullowhee Normal & Industrial
School, a North Carolina state institution founded in 1889 as Cullowhee
High School (also called Cullowhee Academy).
This project is 100% supported with federal LSTA funds made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.
