Hendersonville
Aug 19th 1863
Col. Jos Cathey
D Sir --
Enclosed I send you
an address I have just issued to the
people of this district, as also several
copies in a different envelope. You
will please do me the favor to hand
them to gentlemen in your neighborhood.
The Convention that met here yesterday
there being but five or six counties represented
adjourned to meet again on the 28th
of Sept. -- but I am inclined to think
the adjt. will prove to be indefinite.
If so, and no peace candidate is sought
out as such, I consider my election
beyond _____adventure. I am aware that
Col. Davidson has numerous friends in
the more Western Counties, but I have had
no opportunity as yet, of seeing the people
in their counties. As regards the rest of the
counties, if no other candidate comes out
I can get a large majority while I feel
quite confident of being able to get the
best vote in the army. I _____ that one
or two regiments in Va. voted by mistake
on the 1st Thursday inst. and gave me an
unanimous vote. so I was informed by

Capt. _____ on yesterday just from army.
As regards Dr. Sam Love, I consider him
out of the race. I do not know of a
vote he will get in this county -- indeed,
he will get few votes indeed outside
of Haywood County -- at least, such is the
opinion of gentlemen upon whose judg=
= ment I can rely. --
I am willing to be advised
by my friends, and even now if it can
be made _____ Col. Davidson or any one
else is the man, I would most will=
ingly & cheerfully withdraw(?) from the
_____. --
The difficulty about the con=
=vention was that the members of the
legislature from this District recommended
it, but when they returned home they took
no steps to have a full delegation, and
the friends of a particular individual, who
professes to be the preeminently a peace man,
availed themselves of the opportunity to
send delegates here to have him nominated.
But they failed for the reason suggested.
I would be pleased to have your _____.
I am, Col, Ver Respectfully
Truly Obd. Seervant
Jno D. Hyman
